How to Plan a Photo Shoot

Updated: Feb 2, 2019

If you are planning a photo shoot, you will need to take many things into consideration in order to make your shoot run smoothly and to get the results you are looking for. Whether you are looking to build your portfolio, providing photos for a major event or just want to capture some great memories, it’s a good idea to think of everything in advance so you can have a good experience and get the best images possible. Here are some things you should be keeping in mind.

Idea or Concept: Every shoot has a concept or idea. In some cases, you may want to capture an event, and in others you may be going for a mood or something more abstract. Whatever you may be going for, it’s a good idea to write your ideas down so you are prepared for the shoot and get the kind of images you want.

Equipment, Timing and Location: These are all factors involved in logistics and should be considered carefully. The kind of equipment you use will help you get the right effect for your photos. The time of day you shoot should be considered so you get the type of lighting you need. Location will give you the background you desire. Be sure to think of any types of permits that may be required as well.

Models: If you are taking family photos or shooting an event, your subjects will be the real life people involved in the shoot. However, if you are going for something more fashion oriented, or abstract, it’s likely you will be working with models to get the mood you are going for.

If this is the case, think of the look of the models you are working with. Will they provide the mood you want for your pictures? Are they experienced enough to look comfortable in front of the camera? Are they reliable? How much will they need to be paid? These are all questions you will need to ask yourself in order to get the right models for your shoot.

Crew: In some cases, you may be able to work alone to get the images you want. In other instances, you may need a crew to help you make sure your lighting is good or to help models with hair, makeup and wardrobe. You want to make sure you are working with a crew that is experienced and reliable. You must also consider any costs involved in paying your crew and make sure you have money in your budget to cover that expense.

Of course, every photo shoot is different, but these are some basics you should think about in making yours work. While models and crew may not be factors in every shoot, you will always need to think about ideas and concepts as well as location, equipment and timing. Taking steps to plan in advance will give you the beautiful pictures that you are sure to treasure.
